About
Artist and mathematician Liliane El Khoury is proud to display, for the first time ever, her collection "The Colour in Her Eyes by Lyl". A captivating fusion of vibrant colours and undulating forms that pay homage to the natural beauty of Cyprus. Drawing inspiration from the endless skies to the crystalline Mediterranean Sea, El Khoury’s work is a testament to her unique journey as an artist, where the precision of science and the expressiveness of art intersect.
El Khoury’s path to becoming an artist is as unconventional as it is inspiring. With a background in chemistry and mathematics, she developed a deep appreciation for the complexity and beauty of the natural world. It was through the lens of chemistry that she first discovered her passion for colour and movement, marvelling at how different elements and compounds exhibited such diverse palettes depending on what they were reacting with. This scientific curiosity quickly evolved into an artistic exploration, where she began to experiment with the interplay of colours and shapes on canvas.
Ever inspired by the expansive universe, her painting style is a marriage of abstract and expressionism. "Oil has been my favourite medium, even from the beginning of my apprenticeship. Its malleability has allowed me the flexibly develop more elegant curves. It spreads freely permitting me to cover large canvases with ease, while highlighting the brilliant colours and bold shapes that I love to create"
"I have always been fascinated by the way colours can interact, blend, and transition into entirely new visual experiences" she explains. "Chemistry taught me to see colour in a way beyond aesthetic appeal by understanding the underlying elements that give rise to these beautiful hues."
Her studies in mathematics further influenced her work, particularly her love for geometry, trigonometry and the infinite curves of calculus. These forms, precise yet fluid, became a recurring theme in her art, symbolising the harmony and balance she found in both mathematical equations and natures perpetual patterns.
"I find beauty in the simplicity and elegance of curves in comparison to the complexities of their origins. They represent a perfect harmony, much like the sea and sky that inspire me."
It is easy to see how El Khoury's use of colour is both a nod to her scientific background and an expression of her deep connection to the Cypriot landscape. "I wanted to create a body of work that reflects the duality of our environment - the way it can be both calm and chaotic, simple and complex," El Khoury explains. "The blues are a tribute to the endless skies and the depths of the sea, while the brighter colours represent the vibrancy of life in Cyprus."
"The Colour in Her Eyes by Lyl" is more than just a collection of paintings; it is a celebration of the artist’s unique perspective, where the rigour of science meets the freedom of artistic expression. El Khoury's work invites viewers to not only appreciate the beauty of the natural world but also to see it through the eyes of someone who understands it on a deeper, more elemental level.
